“You don’t get in life what you want, you get what you believe.” Oprah Winfrey
I think of self awareness like a compass, helping point us towards our true north. Being able to interpret your thoughts and emotions and how they’re guiding you is self awareness. If you want to work on the personal truth you tell yourself, increasing self awareness is a good place to start.
I can honestly tell you that it feels amazing when something makes sense, especially when it’s about you. Having a moment of clarity is like soaking in a bubble bath. It just feels good, because you have a clear understanding of who you are, what you want to do, and what you need to do to get there.
- WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS
I know what you’re thinking “Write down my goal? The heck, how is that supposed to help me?” this is what a negative belief will associate this with, because my instincts want to do the same. I’ve had a negative belief about every single thing in my life since I was little. Only now as an adult, I actively seek self awareness to reshape those negative beliefs.
Setting and achieving goals can be a long and complicated process, but it doesn’t have to be. The only thing that should be complicated about it, is deciding to show up or not every single day.
A simple task like planning out your goal will set you up for success and reshape ideas into actionable process. We live in an incredible era of smart gadgets, you don’t even have to type you can just say “hey siri” and speak your goals.
When I think of writing down my daily goals, I take out my journal and I write every single thing my brain is spitting out, regardless if it sounds dumb or impossible, I write it down. Then I ask myself what is the priority? What are my values? Can I do more? Can I do less?
2. TAKE A PERSONALITY TEST
If you’re struggling to figure out your traits, strengths, and weaknesses; Taking a psychometric test might be helpful. However, take caution and don’t fully believe what these tests you. It can be a good starting point to understanding yourself but It should stay that way. Just a starting a point. Not an excuse to exercise bad behavior.
Just because the results are different from what you expect does not make you any less of who you are. Take certain actions to self reflect after getting the results, come up with a good strategy to crush bad habits. A test is just a test, it will not determine the choices you make, if it does and the choices are bad, make new ones.
I learned about a personality test called the Big 5, I’m going to take it for my YouTube video and post the video on Wednesday, so stay posted. I’m both excited and nervous because I really don’t want to lie to myself when answering the questions, and I don’t want my reality to be shattered because of the results, nor do I want to make decisions based on those results. It will be purely for entertainment purposes only.
3. ASK FOR FEEDBACK
You don’t really know what someone thinks of you until you ask. Others can play a role of an honest mirror if we listen to their observations.
I was listening to a podcast today from Trent Shelton and he preached about comparing yourself to others. This touched my heart because this is a huge bad habit I have. Getting feedback from people is scary and we sometimes allow our fears to judge how we feel. If you’ve ever taken an art class you know there are critique days.
Do you remember feeling anxious, stressed out, freaking out the closer that day came? I do! Every single critique day I freaked out because I had a hard time separating negative thinking from logical thinking. This damaged my self worth. Feedback is meant to be helpful, it only becomes hurtful when someone is being a big terrible jerk. Feedback is for growth, reflection, and goal setting.
